Safety & Training Supervisor – Position Description

Position Summary:

This position works to enhance, reinforce and continually improve the training and safety culture throughout Houston Terminal LLC. by ensuring internal policies are met and external requirements for environmental protection and safe operation of vessels and terminals are met or exceeded. The Safety & Training Supervisor also assists to oversee and conduct independent inspections, internal audits, and reviews of procedures, processes and facilities. This is a training position designed to instill Superintendents with a theoretical and practical knowledge of Safety Culture. Routinely reviewing incident, inspection, and audit findings and following up on outstanding issues and/or corrective actions with the applicable Superintendent, Manager, Master and/or OSH Workplace Committee.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists to train Supt’s to prevent incidents, accidents and non-conformances.
  • Develops a current, high-level awareness and professional understanding of all Safety internal policies, external regulations and industry trends, while providing advice and direction to operations staff.
  • Participates in All training and assists in developing and providing training where required.
  • Assists to mentor operations personnel, providing direction and assistance in the development of Safe Work Practices, Job Safety Analysis, and addressing unsafe work practices.
  • Assists to initiate and oversee investigation of incidents, assists with root cause analysis, prepares reports related to employee injuries, property damage. Makes recommendations on corrective actions.
  • Works closely with the HSSE Manager, Superintendents, and Labor to ensure safety committee meetings are held, minutes are reviewed, and corrective actions are completed.
  • Assists to coordinate and conduct inspections, assessments and audits to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company policy.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with JV partners, Professional Associations, Authorities, Labor Leaders, Administration and regulatory agencies on Safety matters.
  • Hire / Fire authority for all ILA employees and “Stop Work” authority on all operations.
  • Assists in the accomplishment of company objectives by performing other related duties as required by HT Senior Management.

 

Requirements:

  • Superintendent II or equivalent experience
  • Exceptional Safety knowledge and Training skills
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
  • Ability to board and disembark large container vessels from steep gangways
  • Demonstrated initiative to update education and knowledge of current HSSE / Training developments, trends, legislation or programs
  • Competency with Microsoft Office applications
  • Competency with Quick Base applications

Working Conditions:

Must be able to work outside, exposed to all weather conditions including heat, cold, and rain. Standing and walking will be required throughout the course of a normal day.  The wearing of personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, safety shoes, a safety vest and a hard hat will be required.  Other tasks related to management will require sedentary period for computer input and document review.  Required to observe all safety and health requirements for container terminal environment and participate in company and WGMA drug screening programs.

Hours:

Normal core working hours are 07:00-1800 with exceptions made for activities related directly to vessel operations.  Extended hours, days, evenings and weekends common.
